Bali KITAS 2026 — Every Indonesian Residence Permit, Explained

A KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is an Indonesian limited-stay residence permit, valid 1–2 years and renewable. Bali Visa Trusted handles every KITAS type: Digital Nomad (E33G), Working (E23), Investor (E28A), Retirement (E33F), Family (E31), Spouse (E31A), Student, and Entertainment. After several years a KITAS can be upgraded to permanent residency (KITAP).

What Is a KITAS?

A KITASKartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas, or “Limited Stay Permit Card” — is the Indonesian residence permit that lets a foreigner legally live in Bali for the long term, far beyond what any tourist visa allows. Where a Visa on Arrival gives you 30 days and a B211A visit visa up to 60, a KITAS is measured in years: most types are valid for one or two years and are renewable, and several lead onward to permanent residency (KITAP).

Each KITAS is tied to a purpose — the reason you’re staying in Indonesia — and that purpose decides which code applies. Under Indonesia’s current visa-code system, the residence permits are labelled with E-series codes: E33G for digital nomads, E23 for employees, E28A for investors, E33F for retirees, E31 for family dependants, E31A for spouses of Indonesians, and dedicated permits for students and entertainment/creative workers. They share a common backbone — a sponsor, mandatory health insurance, biometric registration, and a residence card (the physical KITAS) plus an electronic record — but each has its own eligibility test, document set, cost and processing time.

Almost every KITAS requires a sponsor: an Indonesian company, an institution, an investment vehicle (a PT PMA), or an individual such as an Indonesian spouse. Choosing the wrong sponsor or the wrong code is the most common reason applications stall — which is why most applicants use a licensed agent. As a registered agency, Juara Holding Group confirms the correct KITAS for your situation, arranges or verifies the sponsor, and files through the official Indonesian immigration portals.

The short version: a KITAS is how you stop being a tourist and start being a resident. Which one you need depends entirely on why you’re in Bali — work, invest, retire, study, family, or remote work.

How to Choose — A Quick Decision Helper

If the table is a lot to digest, start with your reason for staying:

  • I work remotely for a company outside IndonesiaDigital Nomad Visa (E33G). Requires USD 60,000/year income and an overseas employment contract.
  • I’ve been offered a job by an Indonesian companyWorking KITAS (E23). Your employer sponsors you and arranges the RPTKA work plan.
  • I’m investing in or running a business in BaliInvestor KITAS (E28A). You’ll need a PT PMA holding IDR 10 billion in shares.
  • I’m retiring in BaliRetirement KITAS (E33F) from age 55, or the 5-year E33E “Silver Hair” from age 60.
  • I’m bringing my familyFamily KITAS (E31) for the spouse, children or parents of a permit holder.
  • I’m married to an Indonesian citizenSpouse KITAS (E31A), with a path to KITAP after two years.
  • I’m studying — university, language school or yoga teacher training → Student KITAS.
  • I’m a creative being paid by local clients — photographer, DJ, yoga teacher, surf or dive instructor → Entertainment KITAS.

Not sure which fits? That’s exactly what a free consultation is for — message our team on WhatsApp and we’ll point you to the right permit before you spend a rupiah.

Working remotely but not employed? If you create content for your own channels rather than working for an overseas employer, the short-stay C5A Creator Visa may suit you better than a KITAS. And if you only want a short legal stay, compare the B211A visit visa first.

What Every KITAS Has in Common

Whichever code applies, every Indonesian KITAS shares the same structural requirements — knowing them up front makes the process far smoother:

  • A sponsor. A company, institution, investment vehicle or individual that takes legal responsibility for your stay. We arrange or verify this.
  • Mandatory health insurance. Valid in Indonesia for the duration of the permit.
  • A passport valid 6+ months (most types require 18 months for a multi-year KITAS).
  • Proof of funds — commonly around USD 2,000 (or equivalent), plus the income/deposit specific to your visa type.
  • Biometric registration in Indonesia (photo and fingerprints), and a residence registration with the local immigration office.
  • The physical KITAS card plus an electronic record (e-ITAS), and — for many holders — a tax number (NPWP) once resident.

The differences are in the eligibility test (income, age, marriage, investment, enrolment) and the work rights each permit grants. Get those two things right and the rest is paperwork — which is our job.

KITAS vs KITAP — What’s the Difference?

People often ask whether they need a KITAS or a KITAP. They are two stages of the same residency journey:

KITAS KITAP
Full name Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas (limited) Kartu Izin Tinggal Tetap (permanent)
Validity 1–2 years 5 years, extendable indefinitely
Stage Your first residence permit The upgrade after several years
Renewal Renew each cycle (or re-apply, e.g. E33G) Far less frequent
Who qualifies Anyone meeting a KITAS category KITAS holders after a qualifying period
Path to citizenship Indirect Direct stepping stone

A KITAP (permanent stay permit) replaces annual KITAS renewals once you’ve held a KITAS long enough — generally two years as the spouse of an Indonesian, four years as an investor, and around five years as a retiree or worker. Note that the E33G Digital Nomad KITAS is not renewable and does not itself lead to KITAP — nomads who want to settle permanently usually switch to an investor, spouse or retirement route first. We’ll map your long-term path at the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Bali KITAS

What is a KITAS in Indonesia?
A KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) is a limited-stay residence permit that lets a foreigner live in Bali for 1–2 years, renewable. It is tied to a purpose — work, investment, retirement, family, study or remote work — and requires a sponsor and health insurance. After several years it can be upgraded to permanent residency (KITAP).

How long does a KITAS take to process?
It depends on the type. The E33G Digital Nomad KITAS takes roughly 7–10 business days; the Investor KITAS (E28A) around 40–60 business days; and the Working KITAS (E23) about 8–12 weeks because it involves a manpower plan (RPTKA) and work permit. We give you a realistic timeline for your specific case at the quote stage.

Do I need to leave Bali to get a KITAS?
Not always. If you’re already in Indonesia on a B211A/C1 visit visa with enough validity remaining, you can usually convert to a KITAS onshore (alih status) without leaving. The VOA generally cannot be converted onshore. We confirm the route for your situation.

Can my family get a KITAS too?
Yes. The spouse, children (under 18) and parents of a KITAS or KITAP holder can apply for a Family KITAS (E31) as dependants, following the main holder’s permit duration. Family members may study but generally cannot work.

Which KITAS leads to permanent residency (KITAP)?
Most renewable KITAS types do, after a qualifying period — about two years for a spouse of an Indonesian, four for an investor, and around five for a retiree or worker. The Digital Nomad E33G is the main exception: it is not renewable and does not lead to KITAP. See our KITAP guide.
