KITAS Renewal in Bali: 2026 Cost, Timeline & Steps

Last updated: July 2026 · by bvtadmin

Renewing a KITAS in Bali means securing your next annual stay cycle before the current permit expires — and the golden rule is to start 6 to 8 weeks out. Most KITAS types (E23, E28A, E31, E33F, E33G) renew in-country on a one-year cycle with one biometric visit. Let a permit lapse and overstay costs IDR 1,000,000 per day.

Renewal, extension or new application? The words that trip people up

Foreigners lose money and days to the same confusion every year, because three different immigration events get called “renewal” in everyday English. Getting the term right decides which process — and which price — actually applies to you.

  • Extension (perpanjangan) — your existing KITAS continues into its next period under the same sponsor and visa type. This is what most people mean when they say “renew my KITAS.” It is done in-country, before the current permit expires.
  • New application — required when a KITAS has already lapsed, been closed with an EPO, or when you are switching to a different visa type from abroad. You start the sponsorship and telex approval from scratch.
  • Conversion (alih status) — switching from a visa you already hold (for example a C1 tourist visa) into a KITAS without leaving Indonesia. That is a different service entirely, not a renewal.

The rest of this guide covers the common case: extending an active KITAS for another year. If your permit has already expired, skip to the section on missing your window.

KITAS renewal rules by type (2026 snapshot)

Every KITAS renews on its own logic, tied to the sponsor that issued it. The table below is the fast reference; the paragraphs under it flag the traps that catch renewers each year.

KITASCodeTypical validityRenewal cyclePath after renewals
Working KITASE236 months–2 years (usually 1 year)Annually — plus re-issue of RPTKA / manpower permitsKITAP after ~3–4 consecutive years
Investor KITASE28A1–2 yearsOn an active, compliant PT PMA sponsorKITAP after the qualifying period
Family / Spouse KITASE31 / E31A1 year (follows sponsor)While the marriage or sponsor status stays validSpouse KITAP after 2 years of marriage-based stay
Retirement KITASE33F1 yearAnnually — age 55+, income and health cover maintainedKITAP after several consecutive years
Digital Nomad KITASE33G1 yearCurrently extendable once (up to 2 years total)Convert to another route, then KITAP

Two categories carry the most renewal risk. The working KITAS (E23) is really two renewals stacked: the immigration ITAS and the manpower permits (RPTKA/IMTA) behind it must both be extended, and if your employer lets the manpower side lapse, the immigration side cannot proceed. The investor KITAS (E28A) depends on your PT PMA staying active, correctly reported and consistent with your shareholding — an inactive or non-compliant company quietly breaks your renewal. The digital nomad E33G is the newest and the least forgiving on paperwork: expect to re-evidence the USD 60,000-a-year income each cycle.

Documents and biometrics at renewal

A renewal is not a fresh sponsorship, so the file is lighter than your first KITAS — but it is not automatic. Prepare to submit:

  • Passport valid at least 18 months beyond the renewal (never renew a KITAS on a passport near its own expiry — see the FAQ).
  • Your current KITAS / digital e-ITAS and the sponsor’s supporting letter.
  • Updated sponsor documents — company deed and licences for E23/E28A, marriage book for E31A, proof of pension and insurance for E33F, income evidence for E33G.
  • A recent photograph and your current Bali address (domicile).

Under the digital e-ITAS system your permit is now electronic, and re-entry is generally bundled into the permit for most holders rather than issued as a separate MERP stamp — the mechanics are covered in our guide to the digital ITAS card. One thing that has not gone paperless: renewals still require a single in-person biometric appointment (photo and fingerprints) at your local immigration office. Budget for that one visit; a good agent handles everything around it so it stays a single trip, not three.

KITAS renewal costs in USD (2026)

We quote renewals as all-in USD service fees with government fees included, so there is no separate invoice at the counter. The figures below are the published Bali Visa Trusted rates, verified July 2026; your exact quote is confirmed in writing before any payment.

RenewalAll-in USD (annual cycle)Notes
Retirement KITAS E33Ffrom $1,290Age 55+, income and insurance maintained
Digital Nomad KITAS E33Gfrom $1,490Re-evidence USD 60K+ annual income
Family / Spouse KITAS E31 / E31Afrom $990–$1,090Follows the sponsor’s permit
Working KITAS E23from $2,190Includes RPTKA / manpower re-issue
Investor KITAS E28Afrom $2,790Requires an active, compliant PT PMA
Simple in-country extensionfrom $219Where only the ITAS period needs extending

These are premium, full-service figures — we do not compete on the cut-price end, because a botched renewal that pushes you into overstay costs far more than the saving. The complete route-by-route list sits on our pricing page, and the reasoning behind the price gap is set out in our note on using a Bali visa agent for KITAS.

EPO: when you close a KITAS instead of renewing

Not every KITAS should be renewed. If you are leaving Indonesia for good, ending the employment that sponsors your E23, or switching to a different visa type, you close the permit with an EPO — Exit Permit Only (izin keluar tidak kembali). A KITAS does not simply cancel itself when it expires; the EPO formally clears your immigration record and releases the sponsor’s obligations.

The practical points that matter: EPO processing typically takes about 3–4 working days, and once it is issued you generally have only a short window (commonly 3–7 days) to leave Indonesia. Skipping the EPO leaves a loose end on your record that can complicate a future KITAS or KITAP. If, on the other hand, you are moving toward staying permanently, renewal is a stepping stone, not the destination — the upgrade route is explained in our KITAP permanent residency guide.

Missed your renewal window? What happens next

If your KITAS has already expired, you are technically overstaying, and the meter runs at IDR 1,000,000 per day from the day after expiry. There is no in-country extension of a lapsed KITAS — it becomes a new application or an overstay-resolution case. Two paths exist depending on how far past the date you are, both covered in detail on our Bali visa overstay page.

The more common anxiety is the near-miss: your renewal is filed but not yet issued, and the old permit’s date is passing. This is exactly what a bridging visa exists for — it keeps you legal while immigration processes the renewal. The safest move, of course, is to never reach that edge: start the file early enough that a document query or a slow week never becomes an overstay.

FAQ

What is the difference between a KITAS extension and a renewal?

In practice they mean the same everyday thing — continuing your current KITAS into its next period under the same sponsor and visa type, done in-country before expiry (officially perpanjangan). A true “new application” only arises when the permit has already lapsed, been closed with an EPO, or you are switching visa type.

How early should I start my KITAS renewal in Bali?

Begin 6 to 8 weeks before your KITAS expires. That margin absorbs a document query, the biometric appointment slot, and any manpower-permit re-issue for E23 holders — without brushing against your expiry date. Leaving it to the final week is the single most common reason a straightforward renewal turns into an overstay case.

Do I have to leave Indonesia to renew my KITAS?

No. Standard KITAS renewals are processed in-country while you stay in Bali, with just one in-person biometric visit to your local immigration office. You only leave the country when you are closing the permit with an EPO or switching to a route that requires a fresh telex approval from abroad.

Can I renew a KITAS if my passport is close to expiry?

Risky — immigration expects healthy passport validity beyond the renewal, so a passport near its own expiry can block the process. Renew your passport first, then the KITAS, or ask us to sequence the two so you stay legal throughout. Do not start a renewal assuming a short-dated passport will be accepted.

How many times can I renew before I need a KITAP?

It depends on the type: work and investor KITAS holders commonly renew annually for around 3–4 consecutive years before KITAP eligibility, spouse holders after two years of marriage-based stay, and retirees after several years. The E33G digital nomad KITAS is currently extendable once, so plan a conversion route for year three.

What happens if my KITAS renewal is still processing when it expires?

You do not automatically fall into overstay the moment you have filed correctly, but the safe mechanism is a bridging visa that keeps your status legal while immigration finishes the renewal. The real fix is timing: filing 6–8 weeks out means the renewal is issued well before the old permit’s date passes.
