Digital ITAS Card Indonesia: The e-ITAS Explained (2026)
The digital ITAS — Indonesia’s electronic e-ITAS — is the online version of the KITAS limited-stay permit. For eligible visa types it is now issued automatically on arrival, with the re-entry permit (MERP) bundled in, so there is no plastic card to collect and no separate trip to the immigration office to activate your stay.

What the digital ITAS actually is
ITAS stands for Izin Tinggal Terbatas — the limited-stay permit that a foreigner holds inside Indonesia. The physical card that carried it was universally nicknamed the KITAS. The e-ITAS is the same legal permit, delivered digitally: instead of a printed card and a sticker glued into your passport, your limited-stay status is recorded electronically in the immigration system and confirmed by a PDF you keep on your phone.
Nothing about your rights changes. An e-ITAS holder has exactly the same legal standing as a plastic-card holder — the same validity period, the same reporting duties, the same path toward permanent residency. What changes is the paperwork friction: for the visa types already migrated, the online e-Visa flow produces the stay permit itself, so you no longer queue at a kantor imigrasi in your first weeks just to have your status made official.
Who gets the e-ITAS, and when
The rollout is happening route by route, not with a single switch-flip date. As of July 2026, the electronic e-ITAS is in force for the online e-Visa categories that already run end-to-end through evisa.imigrasi.go.id — including the E33G Digital Nomad KITAS and other single-entry-to-KITAS routes. For those, the official portal states you obtain the electronic limited-stay permit (and re-entry permit) automatically at the immigration checkpoint on arrival.
Indonesia’s wider digital push sits behind this: the All Indonesia arrival platform became the single official entry system on 1 September 2025, and immigration has been steadily moving documents from paper to database. What has not been published on imigrasi.go.id is a nationwide date on which every plastic KITAS is abolished. Treat “all KITAS go fully digital by 2027” as the clear direction of travel, not an enacted deadline — we date every claim here and update it as new decrees land.
e-ITAS vs the old KITAS card and sticker
The practical differences are worth spelling out, because most guidance still describes the paper era.

One habit is still worth keeping from the paper days: carry proof. A checkpoint officer or a hotel in a tourist area may ask to see your permit, so save both the PDF and a printed copy — the same way you would have shown the old card.
Re-entry permits (MERP): what changed
The MERP — Multiple Exit Re-Entry Permit — is the document that keeps your KITAS alive when you leave Indonesia and come back. Under the old system it was a separate application and a separate fee; forget it, fly out, and your limited-stay permit could die at the border, forcing a fresh visa.
Under the e-ITAS, for the eligible online categories, the re-entry permit is issued together with the stay permit automatically, valid for the life of that permit. That removes one of the most common and most expensive expat mistakes. The important caveat: this bundling is confirmed for the specific e-Visa routes described in the official FAQ — it is not yet documented as a blanket rule for every KITAS type. If your permit was issued the older way, do not assume a re-entry permit exists; confirm before you book an international flight.
What existing KITAS holders must do
If you already hold a valid physical KITAS, the headline is reassuring: your card stays valid and there is no published order forcing an immediate conversion to e-ITAS. Your standing obligations are unchanged — report a new passport or a change of address to your immigration office, keep the permit valid, and extend before it expires. Two practical checks before you travel: confirm whether your re-entry permit is bundled or separate, and make sure the passport your e-ITAS is linked to is the one you fly on — a passport change not reported to immigration is a frequent cause of trouble at the gate. Holders on the long game toward permanent residency (KITAP) keep the same qualifying clock; the format of the card does not reset it.

Is the digital ITAS the same as a KITAS?
Yes — legally they are the same limited-stay permit (ITAS). “KITAS” is the nickname for the old plastic card; the e-ITAS is the electronic version of that same permit. Your rights, validity and reporting duties are identical. Only the format changes: a digital record and PDF instead of a printed card.
Do I still get a physical KITAS card?
For the online e-Visa categories already migrated, no — your permit is issued digitally and there is no card to collect. Some routes may still involve a physical element during the transition. As of mid-2026, Indonesia has not published a single nationwide date abolishing plastic cards, so this depends on your specific visa type.
Does the e-ITAS include a re-entry permit automatically?
