The agent’s legitimate role is preparing the file, booking your slots, and physically ferrying documents to and from the counter so you only appear when the law requires you (biometrics) to.

What Officials Advise

Indonesian immigration’s consistent public guidance is to use official channels — applications belong on imigrasi.go.id and its portals, and travellers remain responsible for their own documents at all times. Practical corollaries: never surrender your passport to unlicensed brokers, never let anyone file under a visa class you do not understand, and if a passport is lost or withheld, report it to the police and your embassy immediately. A withheld passport is not a billing dispute; it is a police matter.

Your embassy’s advice will say the same thing in different words: the passport is a government document, you are its custodian, and any handover should be brief, documented, and reversible.
